Many congratulations to the alumni and current members of the MUSE Lab at IIT Gandhinagar, who received their degrees today: Ananya Sharma, Anushka Yadav, Kuldeep Jajoria, Jayishnu Roy, Pratibha, Boyapati Suresh, and Chandan Kumar Jha, PhD.
Special congratulations to Ananya Sharma for receiving the President’s Gold Medal and the Institute Gold Medal for her outstanding academic performance, and Chandan Kumar Jha, PhD for receiving the Gold Medal for Outstanding Innovation. Chandan was advised by Arup Lal Chakraborty for his Ph.D. thesis and is now working in the MUSE Lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow.

MUSE Lab members participated in the “Workshop on Recent Trends in Biomedical Imaging and Applications,” organized by the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Allahabad from August 19 – 21, 2021.
Abhishek M.S., a B.Tech. final-year student from IIT Palakkad, worked at the MUSE Lab for his summer research internship, and received the Third Prize for Best Student Presentation at the workshop. Prof. Himanshu Shekhar gave an invited talk on contrast-enhanced and molecular ultrasound imaging. Prof. Karla Mercado-Shekhar served on the panel of judges for the workshop.

Profs. Himanshu Shekhar, Sameer Dalvi, and Karla Mercado-Shekhar conducted the Virtual Workshop on “Ultrasound Contrast Agents: Application of Gas-filled Microbubbles in Biomedical Engineering” on July 22 – 23, 2021 at IIT Gandhinagar.
Prof. Mark Borden (University of Colorado Boulder), Prof. Mohan Edirisinghe (University College London), and Prof. Kenneth Bader (University of Chicago) participated as international speakers.
The workshop was supported by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission. 79 participants attended from the Indian subcontinent, Europe, and North America.

Ananya Sharma was invited as an alumni speaker at the inaugural session of Aarohan 2021, an intensive foundation program for post-graduate students at IIT Gandhinagar. Prof. Karla Mercado-Shekhar and Prof. Himanshu Shekhar chaired the Lightning Round Sessions “Advances in Ultrasound Imaging” (held on 9th June) and “Therapeutic Ultrasound” (held on 10th June), respectively, at the 180th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America – Acoustics in Focus. The “Advances in Ultrasound Imaging” session featured 14 talks and the “Therapeutic Ultrasound” session featured 18 talks from leading groups across the world.

Ananya Sharma, a second year M.Tech. student, delivered an oral presentation of her work at the 45th Annual International Symposium on Ultrasound Imaging and Tissue Characterization. The conference was held virtually and included technical sessions on tissue parameters, tissue elasticity, acoustic radiation force imaging, photoacoustics,
and imaging/robotics.

The MUSE Lab has been awarded the Research Support Scheme grant from the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM) to pursue research on ultrasound-based techniques for oral cancer imaging for the next 3 years. This work is in collaboration with Nirma University, Gujarat University, and Bharat Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Surat.

The MUSE Lab has been awarded the Biomedical Device and Technology Development grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to pursue research on bimodal technologies for tumor delineation for the next 18 months. This work is in collaboration with the BEES Lab from the Indian Institute of Science and the National Institute for Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS).

Karla and Himanshu are participating in the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC) Society’s Professional Networking & Mentoring Program as mentors. This program includes mentors and mentees from 17 countries. Himanshu is one of the five members of the organizing committee of this program.

Ananya Sharma, a second year M.Tech. student, delivered an oral presentation of her work at the International Conference on Formulations in Food and Healthcare (ICFFH) 2021. The conference was held virtually and consisted of presenters from 24 institutions in 7 countries. The conference was organized by the University of Birmingham, UK. IIT Gandhinagar was one of the partnering institutions.

Prof. Himanshu Shekhar was awarded the Har Govind Khorana-Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. This award includes a 3-year fellowship and a research grant, which will enable Prof. Shekhar to pursue ultrasound-based approaches for treating breast cancer.
