Dr. Chinmay Ghoroi

Dr. Ghoroi joined IIT Gandhinagar as an Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering in 2009. He became Associate Professor in 2015 and Professor in 2020. His research focuses on particle engineering for cohesive and fine powder processing (in dry form). The research mainly encompasses understanding inter-particle forces; bulk behavior of fine cohesive powders under different humidity, surface modification of particle using dry coating, plasma, & chemical method for improved powder flow, preparing super-hydrophobic particles; for drug dissolution and controlled drug release; for improved reactions among particulate solids etc. The other area of interest is water treatment and fire safety. He has created a Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) on Chemical Processes . Also, he played a crucial role to set up a Centre for Safety Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar which is one of its kind in India. He is the Coordinator of Centre for Safety Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar and organized International Conference on Safety (2012), International Conference on Safety (2014) , International Conference on Safety (2017), International Workshop on Process Safety (2012), Workshop on Fire Safety (2013), Symposium on Process Safety (2013) , International Workshop on Fire Investigation (2014) and International Workshop on Enclosure Fire Dynamics (2014), Symposium on Process Safety (2017) at IIT Gandhinagar. Dr. Ghoroi has arranged several other workshops such as Reducing discharge of hazardous chemicals in dye and textile industries (2018), Use of ICP-MS to determine the toxic heavy metals in industrial effluents (2018), Pharmaceutical Powder Handling and Characterization (2019), Use of HPTLC for industrial product analysis (2020), Process Hazard Analysis for Chemical Industries (2021), Symposium on E-Mobility in India: Safety and the way forward (2022), DSIR - CRTDH Conclave (2023) . Dr. Ghoroi created a Network CRTDH Platform for industries and brought all 18 CRTDHs in the country on a single platform for making CRTDH more accessible to industries.

Dr. Ghoroi is working with different Government agencies (DSIR, MHRD, DST, BRNS, DRDO) and Industries such as UL, Shah Bhogolil and Jethilal Brother, Wockhardt Ltd., D. P. Pulveriser Industries etc. including several dyes industries in Gujarat. He has taught / and presently teaching several courses such as Chemical Engineering, Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering, Process Equipment Design and Economics, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Process Simulation and Analysis, Water Quality Engineering, Powder Processing & Surface Energetics etc. He is also teaching a few safety courses in the area of Fire and Chemical Process Safety. Before moving to academics, he served in the industry for about 5 years as a Chemical Engineer (Operation) and Senior Software Development Engineer in the process/simulation industry.

Dr. Ghoroi has done his Bachelor in Chemistry (Hons) (1995) and Chemical Engineering (1998) from Calcutta University. He has completed his Masters in Chemical Engineering (2000) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and PhD in Chemical Engineering (2008) from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He has received B.S. Gelot Faculty Chair from IIT Gandhinagar (2018 - 2021 & 2021 - 2026), The Excellence in Outreach Activities for the year 2019 - 2020 from IIT Gandhinagar, The Excellence in Research Award for the year 2016-2017 from IIT Gandhinagar, The Excellence in Institute Building Award for the year 2013-2014 from IIT Gandhinagar, R.G. Manudhane PhD student Excellence Award for best PhD thesis (2008) from Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Employee Excellence Award (SIM4ME Thermodynamics Pride Award) from Invensys Process System, Hyderabad, (2008). He was Visiting Scholar at Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, Texas A&M University (May – July 2013) and New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates , New Jersey Institute of Technology (January – December 2010). Dr. Ghoroi was Guest Editor of the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries and an Associate Editor of Particulate Science and Technology. He served as a member of the several committees formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for NGT Vapi (OA No. 95 of 2018 ), NGT Tarapur (OA No. 64 of 2016 (WZ)), NGT Dahej (OA No. 22 of 2020) and NGT Naroda (OA No. 07/2020 (WZ)), NGT Ahmedabad (OA No. 258 of 2020). He was earlier member of Chemical Taskforce of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI). Presently Dr. Ghoroi is serving as a member in several committees of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB); Member in Board of Governors (BOG) of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, Gujarat; Member in Sub-Committee for Chemical Sector in Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Western Region (Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra), Non-Executive Independent Director (DIN: 10697793) in Gujarat Alkalies & Chemicals Ltd. (GACL). He is also serving as a member of the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and Sustainability Committee, Audit Committee and Risk Management-cum-Safety Committee of Directors of GACL. Dr. Ghoroi is also currently serving as Editor-in-Chief in Particulate Science and Technology (An International Journal).
