Department of Biological Sciences and Engineering<\/strong> at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar,<\/strong> organised a poster presentation for M.Tech. Second-year students and PhD students who were working on their Independent projects. This was a great opportunity for everyone to interact and gain an understanding of the wide variety of work being done in the department. It was an informative session.<\/span><\/p>\n

Megha Mehta<\/strong> and Nidhi Yadav<\/strong>, first-year PhD candidates from our lab, presented their work from their independent projects.<\/span>

The Indian Institute of Technology hosted the I<\/span>EEE-UFFC Special Topics School on Waves and Transducers<\/b>. A total of <\/span>35 participants and 6 instructors<\/b> (including 9 international faculty and students from the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, the US, and Indonesia).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 0<\/b>: A <\/span>meet-and-greet event<\/b> marked the start of the workshop, where participants had a chance to interact with one another and bond before the workshop began.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 1<\/b>: Detailed lectures on <\/span>Acoustic Wave Theory by Prof. Koen Van Dongen<\/b> and <\/span>Piezoelectric Materials by Prof. Sandy Cochran<\/b> were delivered. The day concluded with a lecture by <\/span>Dr Kajoli Krishnan Banerjee<\/b>, providing insights into her experiences in industry research.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 2<\/b>: Insightful lectures on <\/span>Transducer Design and Fabrication by Dr Holly Lay<\/b> and on <\/span>CMUTs and PMUTs by Prof. Omer Oralkan<\/b> were delivered. The concluding talk by <\/span>Prof. Karla Mercado Shekhar<\/b> shed light on the human side of science and engineering, drawing on lessons learned from her academic journey. <\/span>This day marked the beginning of transducer fabrication by candidates attending the workshop<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 3<\/b>: Lectures on <\/span>Ultrasound Systems and Electronics by Dr Holly Lay<\/b> and on <\/span>Contrast Enhanced Imaging and Therapy by Prof. Himanshu Shekhar<\/b> were delivered. Students were given tours of the <\/span>MUSE Lab facilities<\/b>, progress was made in their transducer fabrication process, and the day concluded with the <\/span>gala dinner<\/b>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 4<\/b>: More lectures on <\/span>Simulating Transducers by Dr Holly Lay and Prof. Sandy Cochran<\/b> and on<\/span> Unconventional Application of Ultrasound by Omer Oralkan<\/b> were delivered. <\/span>Fabricated transducers were put to the test, and most of the 16 transducers worked!<\/span><\/i> A visit to the <\/span>Centre for Creative Learning at IITGN<\/b> enlightened the students with the magic of science and mathematics!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Day 5:<\/b> The<\/span> final day of the IEEE-UFFC Special school<\/b> on Waves and Transducers concluded with lectures on <\/span>Waves in Heterogeneous Media by Prof. Koen Van Dongen<\/b> and on <\/span>Ultrasound Elastography by Prof. Karla Mercado Shekhar<\/b>. Later, the <\/span>students gave presentations about the testing of their self-made transducers, the characterisation results, and the lessons learned from the workshop.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> MUSE Lab<\/b> members presented our work at the <\/span>IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS) 2025<\/b>, held in <\/span>Utrecht, the Netherlands<\/b>, from <\/span>September 15th to 18th<\/b>. <\/span>
<\/span>Akash Chandra<\/b> and <\/span>Jagruti M. Patil<\/b>, PhD candidates in the MUSE Lab, presented their work in lecture format. They were also selected for the Student Pitch Competition.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Karla Mercado Shekhar<\/b> and <\/span>Dr Billy Yiu, as Associate Editors, conducted the <\/span>Reviewer Training Workshop<\/b> with <\/span>Prof. Alfred Yu<\/b>, Editor-in-Chief of <\/span>IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectronics, and Frequency Control<\/b>.<\/span>
<\/span>We also had a chance to visit the <\/span>Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum)<\/b>, which houses the train used in the first demonstration of the Doppler Effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This conference provided a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and establish new connections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>MUSE Lab<\/b> had the opportunity to host <\/span>Prof. Ashish Ranjan<\/b>, <\/span>a professor of oncology<\/b> at the <\/span>University of Texas Southwestern Medical School<\/b>. He gave an exciting talk titled \u201c<\/span>Tumor Chemoimmunotherapy with Focused Ultrasound and Nanotechnology<\/span><\/i>.\u201d The talk was received enthusiastically by the graduate students, who engaged with several interesting questions. IITGN Research Snip 3.28<\/b> showcased the work done in MUSE Lab, focusing on<\/span> pennate muscles<\/span><\/i>, a type of skeletal muscle that has its muscle fibres arranged at an angle (pennation angle) to the axis of the muscle, giving them a feather-like shape. <\/span>Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography (SWE)<\/b> is employed to quantify the effect of pennation on SWE imaging, helping to assess and validate ultrasound algorithms for muscle assessment.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

On <\/span>11th April 2025<\/b>, some B. Tech, M.Tech, and PhD students from the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, visited the <\/span>SLTL Group (Sahajanand Laser Technology Ltd.) – Medical Division in Gandhinagar<\/b>. The industry visit included laboratory tours and discussions on their latest medical device products, especially indigenous <\/span>cardiovascular stents and laser technologies<\/b>. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to gain insight into how industries work and learn real-world biomedical engineering practices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
